How to Find the Right Exercise for You

exercising has a ton of health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, encouraging healthy appetite, toning our muscles and even increasing

By now, numerous studies have shown us that exercising has a ton of health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, encouraging healthy appetite, toning our muscles and even increasing our overall life span.

But what do you do if you don’t know where to start? You’ve probably seen dozens of people jogging around, but what if you hate it?

Don’t worry, you just have to find the right type of exercise. Here are 5 ways to find out what you’ll enjoy and stick with.

1. What type of movement do you enjoy?

It’s important to know whether you’re more of a cardio or resistance training person.
Some enjoy dancing and running, while others prefer lifting weights and doing sit ups. Figure out what you’re comfortable with and make it your go-to.

There’s no point in spending an hour on the treadmill if what you really enjoy is bench pressing. Truth is, that exercise is just a good supplement to a healthy diet, so it really doesn’t matter what type of movement you do and how many calories you burn, because in the end it all comes back to your diet.

This is great news, because the moment you start thinking of exercise as a weight loss method and you see it as a supplement to a good life, you’ll instinctively pick what you like best.

2. Do you get bored while training?

I used to do cycling class, but got really bored of the repetitive movement right in the middle, which was awful, since that’s when the instructor bumps up the tempo and if you’re bored, you’re dead.

I then realized that I love jumping, so I got into plyometrics instead. Know what excites you and what bores you and apply it to exercise. If you like to walk more than anything else, perfect! Go for long strolls or hit the hiking trails near you.

Exercise should be something you look forward to, so keep it interesting.

3. Go back in time

Remember how fun it was to play outside as a kid? Yeah, I’m talking about the time before smartphones. Revisit your favorite games and turn them into an exercise.

I rediscovered jumping rope and I integrate it into my workout now. It’s incredible how toned you can get in no time only by jumping rope.

The swings are incredible for training your abs, so hit the park early in the morning and give it a go. If you were a fan of hopscotch, integrate that as cardio. Exercise is important, but don’t stress over it, have fun with it.

4. Get a personal trainer consultation

The first one is usually free when you sign up for a gym membership and what’s great about it is that the trainer will show you exercises you never knew before. Think about it, they have tons of clients and strive to keep it fun for everyone.

The first time I had a consultation at a gym in Boston, I learned to use the TRX equipment to build a ton of muscle and push myself physically. The trainer gave me some great suggestions and I kept doing them on my own whenever I was in a fitness rut, so definitely give it a shot.
